I have seen this, most of us saw this, people are getting exhausted, mentally, even physically, even though, we (so to say) live in civilization, in a world that should, in theory, make everything easier for us. So why there is much burnouts, so much depression, so much people feeling like all they want to do is just lie down and do nothing... We should be happy, I mean, people who do live in objectively good conditions, but the twist is, this feeling of exhaustion, bleakness and depression is much less prominent in poorer countries, even in parts of the world where, for the most of us, conditions of life seem very poor. But, people there seem to be happier somehow. I don't know about hystory but I bet, people were happier back then than most of us now in out homes with AC or heating, with decent food, bed and lots of things we enjoy, or should enjoy.
I believe a lot of the problems stem from anxiety. When you have something, you tend to be scare to lose it. A lot of us lost the ability to live in the moment, we either live in the past or, worse, in the bleak future. Media is to blame for this too. Bleak, depressing titles that predict horrible future and disasters bring so much more views and that's what pays. That is why majority of titles you see in media are click-baits that intentionally bring views. "Are we all heading for disaster?", "Whole humanity will soon be vistims of huge depression", "Economy is failing, will we survive?"... etc. Admit it, you'd rather click on titles like that one than on something more practical and more in-the-moment realistic. Why are people so attracted to movies and tv shows about apocalipse? Maybe it's not just fear, maybe there is some weird enchantment with the idea that there will be no more responsibilities, job, chores, commute, etc once there is just pure survival thing and everything is allowed. Honestly, in that scenario personally I see many many horrible drawbacks and challenges but a lot of people don't. Like in a movie "Castaway" when Tom Hanks's character is stuck on desert island and faces something that was never mentioned in any of similar scripts and books: his tooth gets inflamed. In normal civilization, that's merely costly inconvenience and few dentist visits, but on desert island that could be death. Similar problem is with apocalipse movies and tv shows. It's not just gorgeous warrior looking people in cool clothes, it's something that can and will kill you for a tiny little weakness.
All that is perpetuated through anxiety. We fear loss of job, money, health, independence, people who we care about... It's something that poisons us. In some parts of the world and during hystory, it was (sadly) very normal to die young, to lose someone fast without even knowing what happened really, to be poor, not to have any health care, food even. But people now are used to comfort of modern society so it's normal to be anxious to lose all that. And media and movies perpetuate that fear.
Second it could be comparing yourself to others. We kind of know a lot about this one. Seeing people much much more successful than us, and younger, and better looking, people who look like they got it all, people at the point where we'll likely never be. And this could make us feel bad. Even though, we really can't know how true all that is, because a lot of social media is a theatre, mascarade, just a front view, embelishment, we can't really know what's behind that glamour, smiles, money, fame, can we? Yet, we can not but to compare. Someone is struggling to survive, losing job, earning next to nothing, having chronic illness, chronic pain... while watching people who parade their wealth and fame online and still want more! Not to mention comparing looks. As someone well over 50, I probably don't fit into that cateogory anymore, but young people most often have problem thinking they had to look certain way, with all those AI generated fake people who look perfect (with sometimes exception of one extra arm, few extra fingers or limbs bending wrong ways but well...), and all those influencers and their filters. We have expectations that are not real or reasonable.
Finally, we are exhausted because life is fast. We can not just sit and enjoy it we are always expected to chase something: money, better job, career, family, success, love, relationship, fun (especially during Holidays and Vacations), beauty, some illusion of perfect life, ethernal youth.... We can't just exist, we have to be DOING something all the time. If we lose the job, we lose A LOT, and job market is cruel, now they have lists of what they want and need, not just know your job, but look great, be young, have at least 10 years experience in everything, be always available, always prove that you will do anything... it's hard because it's impossible. Because we are humans and not robots. Even on Holidays and Vacations you have a feeling that you need to force fun, to see as much as you can, to visit many places, to feel happy, not to get sick (like you can control that!), not to feel unwell, to be max happy! BEcause you need to have that time! And that creates unneeded pressure. We are conditioned to feel the need to perform all the time. Even people who don't work or never worked, feel some pressure, and fears, and it never ends. And there is of course, pressure on people who are good and want to help, to always help, to always be available, to do good things, because they are needed It's not a bad thing, just the contrary, but it creates certain pressure to never relax.
That is... what it is... exhaustion.
And now, a photo of a cat who doesn't have such problems.
