In no particular order:
Grace and Frankie
Most Hollywood movies and series, and Hollywood in general, just hates older people, especially old people. They present them as monsters, ugly, something to be scared of or disgusted by etc. They push them in the back as much as they can. This is a gem. Gorgeous Jane Fonda and cute and funny Lilly Tomlin are great comedy team that brings comedy to the top. Followed by other equally great actors, some of them terribly underrated (still), this show was sadly cancelled on cliffhanger, which is terrible injustice.
I love how it puts people over 70 in main roles and focuses on their lives and needs, their problems and comic as well as tragic moments. It's a great comedy with valuable real moments from life, and it doesn't back up topics that may be hard and still manages to deal with them with comedy and grace. Pity it was cancelled. But perfect from start to end.
Arcane
Masterpiece of digital art. Very well done story, rounded, with complex characters and stories, with a lot of focus on each character, each person and being as separate and unique. It deals with mental trauma, past issues, politics, love, betrayal, hope, different worlds, even parallel possibilities of what might have happened! It is pretty obvious a team of professional writers made the script, and I love that they didn't overexplain, they made us think and observe.
And it looks so freaking good! Visuals are stunning, I could stare at any scene and just look at it, for quite some time. Story is not 100% perfect but well rounded, complex, without too much explanation (show don't tell(, intelligent and lets you discover what is happening. Definite must watch!
You're The worst
A little known gem with actors that didn't get enough recognition. This is unique (a bit dark) comedy about people who are problematic, have tone of issues, each one of them in their each own ways. They are pretty much all terrible people, some more, some less, but no one is really sparred (see the title). It's not realistic, of course, but it's over the top funny and it deals with really risky stories and topics and does it flawlessly! Actors are amazing, and how they are still pretty unknown is beyond me.
Story is getting more and more ridiculous by each season but it's rounded in last episode in very satisfying way. Even though all main characters are pretty terrible people, you just have to love them all. That's the magic of this script and perfectly chosen actors who nailed each their own part. Absolute underrated gem!
Heartbreak High (1994 - 1999)
This one is a bit nostalgic for me. I was in my early 20s when this was popular and made, and I can still watch it and still enjoy it. It deals with light and some quite heavy topics of being in high-school, not just for students but for teachers and parents too. Some of the topics are quite dark and risky, some are sad and heavy, some are lighter. But in general, this is one of the absolute best series about high-school that I've ever seen. Not that there is much of competition, most of such series is awful, but if you want to watch one, watch this one. There is a lot of humor, sadness, real life lessons and a lot of things to learn no matter how old you are.
Black Adder
Should I even write why? It was just perfect, from start to finish. Every season perfectly rounded with somewhat funny/sad, but very well done ending. British humor at its peak. Rowan Atkinson's best in my opinion. Almost every single scene and line is funny which is tough to achieve. Everything is important, and the visuals are extremely well done.
Most seasons have young Hugh Laurie which is a true gem to see. A lot of phrases are legendary and still in use. Historic events are pretty accurate, cruel, twisted and extremely silly and funny at the same time. Nothing is glossed or glamourized. Great series.
After Life
Ricky Gervais's masterpiece, sad comedy about loss, grief and finding new purpose in life. Funny and sad, quite intelligent and real, a must-watch. This is really unique presentation of grief of a man whose wife died of cancer and how he deals with loss and his father being sick and his sudden change of view of life. Even though the story is sad, there are many funny and touching moments and some great British actors.
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
Absolute Anime gem, probably one of the best ever made. Every episode is 100% perfection in every single sense. Complex multi-dimensional characters, multiple stories that intertwine perfectly, comedy moments that perfectly balance quite hard topics and sometimes violent stories and moments. Brilliant presentation of Alchemy and toying with life and nature and what is the cost of it. Incredible mix of everything, comedy, tragedy, violence, serenity, fantasy, realism, love and hate... It literally has everything for anyone, and psychological aspects of characters and stories are brilliantly done. And the ending is just perfect! One of the rare few moments that actually made me cry (don't laugh at me, just see it!). If you want to see one Anime series, at least for start, try this one. You will not regret it.
Dark
German carefully crafted masterpiece about complex topic of time travelling and consequences, as well as about parallel worlds created by changing the past and consequences of messing with timelines and events. It's hard to describe this series, it's incredibly complex and your attention has to be sky high at all the times, which is not easy for me. I still made it to the end and I am impressed.
Actors are great and though there are a lot of them, in multiple timelines, they really tried to chose look-alikes to play the same people at different age, which is impressive. However, prepare to engage your brain. A lot.
Mom
I liked this series a lot. It has almost all female cast, and it deals with quite heavy topics of addictions, along with other tough aspects of life, like diseases, aging, deaths and loss, but handles it with a lot of humor and grace. Actresses are all just perfect, Allison Janney is almost impossibly funny and Anna Farris is right beside her and they share amazing chemistry that is rare and hard to find. There is hardly any bad episodes and even though stories get really dark and heavy often, it never loses its sense of humor and hope. It deals with a lot of grief but does it incredibly well. Better than most people give it credit for.
This series are quite underrated, and though few first episodes didn't really draw me in, it gets better with each episode and each season. I can't forgive them though that they ended it on cliff-hanger. I hate that.
Firefly
Perfect 10 episodes of short living science fiction series with great comedy, action, fantasy, special effects and team of actors who share amazing chemistry and great comedic skills. Premise sounds a bit ridiculous, it's literally Western in space, but execution is just flawless. I didn't expect much from description but I saw the movie fist and it really drew me into series. Lucky for us, even though series were cancelled, there was a movie that ended it and rounded it, although I wasn't too happy with all the characters that were killed in it. But it was good to have closure.
Pity that the series didn't have more season, but chances are, it could've gotten stale. Or maybe not, we will never know.
The IT Crowd (UK version, of course)
As a software developer myself, I really enjoyed this series. It's ridiculous, it's funny, silly, it's typical best British humor, it's laugh loud funny often and completely and utterly silly and twisted. Which is why I loved it! Three main actors are hilarious but supporting actors are not much behind. As usual thing in UK series, this one is quite ridiculous and has some over-the-top moments, but it fits just right!
If you are in IT job especially, prepare to laugh out loud watching this underrated gem, and please, skip the USA version, it sucks!
Coupling
Absolute British comedy masterpiece about relationships, friendships and couples. It's funny from start to finish, although one of the main actors leaving after few seasons did a number on this otherwise perfect series. It's dealing with a lot of topics that are now maybe a little "too 1990s" but I love it and I think it is super funny. It is naughty, as it claims, and it deals with love and relationship issues that are not so usual in other series (at least, not at the time), and, as a fan of British humor, of course, there is a lot of it.
You will recognize one of the main actors who still has quite well built career in Hollywood. It is also short enough not to lose its charm and ends just in time to make us want more and to be a little pleased that ending was kind of well rounded.
Honorable mentions
Seinfeld - so so many famous phrases, every episode legendary, I can watch it over and over again.
Friends - same as Seinfeld, timeless, funny, I can always watch it again and again.
Everybody loves Raymond - ridiculous, over the top main characters, silly but quite realistic life situations, very consistent from first to last episode. Quite funny.
Third Rock from the Sun - First 1-3 seasons are PERFECT! Concept is amazing, aliens getting to know how it is to be a human. Actors are brilliant. But, sadly, in time, series lost its appeal, which is why they ended up on this part of list. Still recommended.
Married... with Children - Great, now controversial series, I just LOVE! Actors are perfect and have amazing chemistry. Comedy is multi-layered which people often misunderstood, and it deals with things that were way before its time. It looks horrible at first sight but I promise you, you will love it when you get it and go under surface level because it's deeper than it looks. Quite underrated very funny, but it had few bad episodes, especially those that were trying to make spin-offs.
Better than us - Russian science fiction, really beautiful to look at and deals with some very very interesting stories and topics. I loved it, actually. It looks great, it's very high-end, story is close to flawless, and actors are very good. The ending is a bit "cliff-hanger-ish" but it seems nothing came out of it. Old topic - unique execution.
